The UFV downtown facility was developed in partnership between Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation and the University of the Fraser Valley to provide learning and seminar facilities while contributing to the vibrancy of Chilliwack’s downtown core.
The project includes the complete renovation of an existing BMO bank building originally constructed in the 1970’s. The circular configuration naturally leant itself to the layout of classrooms and seminar spaces with a radial arrangement of desks with views onto the center point of the circle. A generous central gathering space was provided through the core of the building with an existing circular skylight as the focal point. The facility will be used both for classrooms as well as displays, exhibits and presentations.
The intent of the exterior design is to retain the circular brick masonry and infill the existing stucco areas with a multi-tone coloured metal panel system. The existing fabric canopies are removed as well as the angled portion of the glass canopies to provide an open feeling in the plaza space. A four foot high circular parapet has been added to the roof to provide a vertical emphasis and expression of the circular nature of the building.
